About the Falmouth & Penryn Cycling Campaign

ABOUT US

The Falmouth and Penryn Cycling Campaign supports the aims of the Government’s proposals as set out in the Department for Transport publication Gear Change, a Bold Vision for Cycling and Walking 2020.

We will:

  • Campaign and lobby both local and national Governments to provide the means for safe cycling and walking for all in and around the Penryn and Falmouth areas;
  • Promote the benefits of Active Travel, as an alternative to private cars, for the Environment and for residents, visitors and businesses within the area;
  • Provide a voice for and represent the views of cyclists in Penryn and Falmouth;
  • Work with other organisations and individuals who share our aims. We are a volunteer group and have no affiliation with any political party.

Action Plan 2024/25

Cornwall Council, in the Local Transport Plan, aim to reduce motor vehicle usage for short journeys, under 5km, by 50%, as part of the wider target of being carbon neutral by 2030. Road Transport contributes around 27% of Cornwall’s carbon footprint. There is a recognition that this will mean fewer motor vehicles on our roads.

As part of our aims for safer, better and more walking and cycling in the area covered by the Falmouth & Penryn Community Area, we will call upon Cornwall Council to:

  1. Create and implement a plan to develop a number of Low Traffic Urban Neighbourhoods; significantly reducing overall traffic levels, increasing walking, wheeling and cycling, improving air quality, and reducing casualties. This will more easily enable the development of walking and cycling routes between neighbourhoods negating the obstacle of narrow faster main roads.
  2. Develop and implement the Local Walking and Cycling Infrastructure Plan, extending it to include routes to neighbouring villages. Remove physical barriers on existing cycle paths. Provide additional signage to make drivers aware of the presence, and needs, of cyclists.
  3. Reduce the extent of on street parking, providing more space for safe cycling. Control pavement parking, which hinders safe routes for pedestrians. Use a proportion of car park charges to fund increased active travel infrastructure.
  4. Provide for the secure storage of cycles in shopping areas, town centres and employment areas. More people will be encouraged to cycle to work if there are secure areas to leave bicycles.
